Back To School Homework Stations for Kids

Our kids are 4 and 7, and not only do they have homework but they also require the use of a computer to complete many assignments. That meant we needed an open area where we could create a stylish and functional homework station while monitoring their computer usage.

EASY HOMEWORK STATION

Thankfully, our family room is rather large, allowing us to carve out an area to create a homework station — and with adequate parental supervision.

We decided on two inexpensive, sturdy and slender desks with metal frame, in keeping with the style aesthetics of the room. Placing the desks side by side and against an unused wall allows for space saving and a larger surface area for homework, drawing or crafting. More importantly, it allows the kids to share one homework station with clear separation by simply butting the self-end of the desks together.

DECOR TIP: we used a little black velcro strip to attach the desks together.

In keeping with the clean, semi-industrial look, we opted for these Porch & Den Erie Chairs in espresso. They are comfortable and take up very little space.

DESKTOP SPACE-SAVING ACCESSORIES

While a wall of windows flooding our family room with daylight is quite welcoming, it also means we don’t have any vertical space opportunity for added storage or a wall area for display.

We compensated by adding compact desktop organizers, paper holders and trays, and placing baskets on the shelfs to maximize storage.

For us, this inexpensive homework station is the perfect way to keep an eye on the kids as they complete their daily assignments.
