Brown kitchen cabinets are here to stay!

WEEK 1 – Kitchen Update – One Room Challenge Spring 2022

Y’all, it’s that time again and I’m SUPER EXCITED to be updating our kitchen and sharing the experience in this Spring’s One Room Challenge (hosted by Apartment Therapy) as they celebrate their 10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!

In this first week, there’s still a lot of last minute details and orders to finalize but I’m over-the-moon with this vision (see mood board below), the material selections, and the amazing sponsors I get to work with this time around!!

I’d love for y’all to join along and be a part of the process with me for the next eight weeks!⁣⁣

The Goal

Normalize brown kitchens!!

Yup, I said it! Kitchens do not have to be all white with marble slabs and subway tile backsplash to be aesthetically pleasing; they can also be warm, neutral and with brown cabinets. We’re talking maple cabinets (like mine), lighter oak, deep brown or even cherry. The trick is to enhance your kitchen design to modernize the look of your brown cabinets. This includes everything from updated appliances, to lighter and more streamlined backsplashes, to contrasting or complimentary hardware, and more.

My goal is to organize and breathe new life to my kitchen, visually and seamlessly connect the open galley space to the newly renovated adjacent dining room, and refresh my light brown maple cabinets without completing a full remodel. And, all the while staying on budget!

BTW, I’m also excited to team up with one of Havenly’s amazing designers for some much needed guidance.

The Plan

  • Declutter (get rid of extra and mismatched dinnerware and the lot)
  • Deep clean (and professionally re-seal tiled floors)
  • Remove extra cabinets and replace with floating shelves
  • Replace solid wood cabinet doors with glass ones
  • Update overhead lighting
  • Add under cabinet lighting
  • Update backsplash
  • Add pot filler
  • Replace major appliances
  • Update hardware
  • Reorganize the pantry, create new shelving and new refrigeration option
  • Reorganize all cabinets / drawers, outfitting them with custom storage solutions
  • Create board and batten wall
  • Create photo wall
  • Update stairwell leading to kitchen
  • Update window and doorway trim
  • Paint, paint and more paint
  • And more…I feel like I’m already tired!!

So, while the majority of social media seems semi-obsessed with white kitchens, we’re going to update this brown kitchen and make her perfect — for our family, our needs and in keeping with the existing style of our home.

I’m so glad you stopped by! Be sure to check in weekly on this blog for updates and also catch up on my daily lifestyle and home decor tips by following me on the gram @thefarafix
